Department of Nephrology and Rheumatology

The Rechts der Isar department of Nephrology carries out pre-operative (care before the transplant operation) and post-operative care (care after the transplant) in the area of kidney transplants. The department also carries out a routine follow-up of post-transplant patients. The head of the department Prof. Dr. med. Uwe Heemann is a co-editor of several international journals and has gone on to contribute to the body of knowledge in medicine worldwide. He works with a team of senior medical doctors who are well-experienced and also contribute internationally to the body of knowledge. The department of nephrology at Rechts der Isar hospital is recognized as a research and training institution by the Europäischen Nieren- und Transplantationsgesellschaft (ERA / EDTA) which can be translated as the European Renal and Transplant Society. It is also recognized by the German Society of Nephrology.

The wards of the Hospital consist of single and double rooms equipped with basic amenities. Some of them are bathrooms that are easily accessible, safes for storing valuables and a TV system for each bed. There is also a broad network of out-patient clinics that patients can visit for care after a kidney transplant for further care. In addition to that, outpatient clinics take care of general nephrology and rheumatology. There are also dialysis units for people who need dialysis.

The Department of Nephrology at the university hospital Rechts der Isar specializes in:

  • Chronic renal diseases such as glomerulonephritis; chronic kidney disease caused by complications of diabetes or hypertension; bacterial kidney disease and inflammatory kidney diseases.
  • Kidney damage due to Systemic autoimmune diseases such as lupus erythematosus
  • Genetic kidney disease eg familial cystic kidney, M. Fabry, Alport syndrome
  • Diagnosis and treatment of secondary hypertension.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of metabolic abnormalities and other rare diseases
  • Enzyme replacement therapy for Fabry disease and Gaucher disease
  • All forms of dialysis including hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.
  • Targeted removal of antibodies from the blood for therapy of kidney diseases caused by autoimmune diseases
